Well, they usually tell the drive which unit to sign on as, but the Amiga
does this in its cabling/interface, so I'd say they all have to be set to
unit 0 (My 2 internal drives are).

Yeah, it'd be for the compatibility levels of the logic, TTl and CMOS have
different interpretations of logic 0 and 1 when the voltages aren't close to
the power supply (0V and 5V)

I'd say they're probably for configuring the connector on the drive. Amiga
drives have the diskchange signals swapped around some way, maybe it's a way
of changing that so it's compatibly with a PC also (as a 720k drive). As for
the others, I don't have a clue either, sorry...
